Arm and thigh lift in London

An arm lift (brachioplasty) and a thigh lift (thighplasty) remove loose, hanging skin from the upper arms or inner thighs. Mr Yildirim Oezdogan, consultant plastic surgeon, offers arm and thigh lift surgery to adults at hospitals in London, often after significant weight loss.

Who it may help

An arm or thigh lift may be considered if you have loose skin on the upper arms or inner thighs that causes discomfort, rubbing, skin irritation or difficulty with clothing, and that exercise cannot improve. This is common after significant weight loss, whether through diet and exercise, bariatric surgery or weight-loss medication, and with age. Surgery is best done once your weight has been stable for 6–12 months.

Arm lift (brachioplasty)

Excess skin, and sometimes fat, is removed from the upper arm. The scar usually runs along the inner arm or the back of the arm, depending on your preference. If there is also loose skin towards the armpit or side of the chest, the scar may extend into the armpit or along the side of the chest wall.

Thigh lift (thighplasty)

Excess skin is removed from the inner thigh. The scar usually runs along the inner thigh. When there is more extensive laxity, it extends into the groin crease in a T-shape.

Liposuction can be added to either procedure for better overall contour. Energy-assisted devices may help the skin contract slightly.

What surgery involves

Each procedure usually takes 2–3 hours under general anaesthetic, or 3–4 hours when combined with liposuction. Surgery is usually carried out as a day case. Small drains may be used for a short time.

Your consultation

At your consultation Mr Oezdogan will:

  • discuss what you would like to change and why

  • examine you and explain which options are suitable, including non-surgical alternatives or not having surgery

  • explain the benefits, risks, recovery and the possibility of further surgery in the future

  • give you written information to take away

  • Mr Oezdogan will discuss where your scars will be and agree the scar position with you before surgery.

You will be asked about your weight history, any weight-loss treatment, smoking and general health.

If you take weight-loss medication, weekly injections usually need to be paused 2–4 weeks before surgery and daily tablets 1–2 days before, to reduce anaesthetic risk.

Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over. You will be given time to reflect before deciding, and a second consultation is offered before surgery is booked.

Risks and recovery

These are discussed in detail at your consultation and in writing. They include:

  • a collection of fluid (seroma)

  • bleeding, infection and delayed wound healing

  • scarring: the scars are long, and because the arms and thighs move a lot, they can widen over time

  • numbness or altered sensation near the scar

  • swelling of the arm or leg, which usually settles

  • asymmetry, and the possible need for further surgery

  • blood clots in the legs or lungs. This is a risk with any operation under general anaesthetic.

A compression garment is worn for six weeks. Most people return to desk work after 2–4 weeks and to strenuous exercise after about six weeks.

Surgery aims to remove loose skin and improve contour, but individual results vary and no particular outcome can be guaranteed.

Where surgery takes place

Consultations and body contouring surgery take place at Highgate Hospital (Nuffield Health) and The London Welbeck Hospital. Day-case procedures take place at Chase Lodge Hospital, Mill Hill.

Frequently asked questions

How visible will the scars be?

The scars are long but are placed where they are less visible, such as the inner arm or inner thigh. They fade over 12–18 months but do not disappear.

How do I arrange a consultation?

Send an enquiry through the Contact page.

Will liposuction alone tighten my arms?

If the main problem is fat with good skin elasticity, liposuction may be enough. If there is significant loose skin, a lift is usually needed.

Do you treat patients under 18?

Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over.

Can I have arms and thighs done at the same time?

Sometimes, but they are often staged so that recovery is easier. This is discussed at your consultation.

When will I see the result?

Swelling settles over several weeks. The final result is usually seen after 3–6 months, and sometimes up to a year.
