Breast augmentation in London

Breast augmentation increases breast size or improves breast shape, usually with breast implants. Mr Yildirim Oezdogan, consultant plastic surgeon, offers breast augmentation to adults at hospitals in London.

What breast augmentation involves

Breast augmentation can be done in three ways:

  • Implants: silicone implants are placed through a small incision, usually in the fold under the breast. They sit either behind the breast tissue or partly behind the chest muscle. Shape, size and profile are chosen with you to suit your build and breast tissue.

  • Fat transfer: your own fat is taken from another area by liposuction and injected into the breasts. It suits a modest increase in size or refining shape, and more than one session may be needed.

  • Composite augmentation: an implant combined with fat transfer. The fat can soften the edges of the implant and improve contour.

The operation usually takes 1–2 hours under general anaesthetic, depending on whether other procedures are combined. It is carried out as a day case or with an overnight stay.

Is it right for you?

Breast augmentation may be considered if you would like larger breasts, want to restore volume after pregnancy or weight loss, or want to improve a difference in size. It is important to have realistic expectations and to make the decision for yourself.

If your breasts have dropped noticeably, an uplift may be recommended as well.

Your consultation

At your consultation Mr Oezdogan will:

  • discuss what you would like to change and why

  • examine you and explain which options are suitable, including non-surgical alternatives or not having surgery

  • explain the benefits, risks, recovery and the possibility of further surgery in the future

  • give you written information to take away

Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over. You will be given time to reflect before deciding, and a second consultation is offered before surgery is booked.

Risks and recovery

These are discussed in detail at your consultation and in writing. They include:

  • bleeding, infection, scarring and changes in nipple sensation

  • capsular contracture (firm scar tissue around the implant)

  • implant rupture, rippling or change of position

  • asymmetry, and the possible need for further surgery

  • rarely, breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)

  • symptoms some people attribute to implants, sometimes called breast implant illness

  • for fat transfer: some of the transferred fat is reabsorbed, so more than one session may be needed; small oil cysts or firm areas may form; and there may be bruising or contour changes where the fat was taken

Most people return to desk work after about 1–2 weeks and to strenuous exercise after about six weeks. A supportive bra is worn for several weeks.

Implants are not lifetime devices and may need replacing in the future. Surgery aims to improve shape and appearance, but individual results vary and no particular outcome can be guaranteed.

Where surgery takes place

Consultations and aesthetic breast surgery take place at Highgate Hospital (Nuffield Health) and The London Welbeck Hospital. Day-case procedures take place at Chase Lodge Hospital, Mill Hill.

Frequently asked questions

Where will the scar be?

Usually in the fold under the breast, where it is less visible. The position is discussed with you.

Is my implant recorded?

Yes. Details of your implant are recorded in the UK Breast and Cosmetic Implant Registry by the hospital where your surgery takes place.

Can I breastfeed after augmentation?

Many people can, but this cannot be guaranteed.

How do I arrange a consultation?

Send an enquiry through the Contact page.

Do you treat patients under 18?

Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over.

Can I have augmentation without implants?

Yes. Fat transfer uses your own tissue and suits a modest increase in size. Mr Oezdogan will explain whether it is suitable for you.
