Breast reduction in London
Breast reduction makes the breasts smaller, lighter and more lifted. Mr Yildirim Oezdogan, consultant plastic surgeon, offers breast reduction to adults at hospitals in London.

What breast reduction involves
Excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed, and the breast is reshaped and lifted. The nipple is moved to a higher position. Liposuction may be used to refine the shape.
The scars usually run around the nipple, vertically down to the breast fold and, in some cases, along the fold (an anchor or vertical pattern). The pattern used depends on breast size and skin quality.
The operation usually takes 2–3 hours under general anaesthetic, with an overnight stay or as a day case.
Is it right for you?
Breast reduction may be considered if large breasts cause neck, back or shoulder discomfort, grooving from bra straps, skin irritation under the breast, or difficulty exercising or finding clothes that fit. Some people choose it for appearance alone.
It is usually best done when your weight is stable. Pregnancy and breastfeeding after surgery are discussed at your consultation.
Your consultation
At your consultation Mr Oezdogan will:
discuss what you would like to change and why
examine you and explain which options are suitable, including non-surgical alternatives or not having surgery
explain the benefits, risks, recovery and the possibility of further surgery in the future
give you written information to take away
Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over. You will be given time to reflect before deciding, and a second consultation is offered before surgery is booked.

Risks and recovery
These are discussed in detail at your consultation and in writing. They include:
bleeding, infection and delayed wound healing, especially where the scars meet
scarring, which may be thick or noticeable
changes in nipple or breast sensation
reduced blood supply to the nipple, and rarely partial or complete nipple loss
areas of firm fat (fat necrosis)
asymmetry, and the possible need for further surgery
a reduced ability to breastfeed
Most people return to desk work after about 1–2 weeks and to strenuous exercise after about six weeks. A supportive bra is worn for several weeks.
Surgery aims to improve shape and appearance, but individual results vary and no particular outcome can be guaranteed.
Where surgery takes place
Consultations and aesthetic breast surgery take place at Highgate Hospital (Nuffield Health) and The London Welbeck Hospital. Day-case procedures take place at Chase Lodge Hospital, Mill Hill.
Frequently asked questions
Is breast reduction covered by insurance or the NHS?
It is usually self-funded. Some insurers cover it when there are medical symptoms, subject to your policy and authorisation. NHS funding is limited and depends on local criteria.
Will I be able to breastfeed?
Some people can breastfeed after reduction, but this cannot be guaranteed.
How do I arrange a consultation?
Send an enquiry through the Contact page.
Do you treat patients under 18?
Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over.
Will the result last?
The reduction is usually long-lasting. Breast shape can still change with ageing, weight change and pregnancy.
Do I need a mammogram before surgery?
If you are 40 or over and have not had a mammogram in the past 12 months, a mammogram is recommended before surgery, in line with UK guidance on breast imaging before aesthetic breast surgery. Younger patients need imaging only if they have symptoms, a strong family history or other risk factors. Breast tissue removed during surgery is routinely sent for laboratory examination. Afterwards, continue routine NHS breast screening and tell the radiographer that you have had a breast reduction.
