Cyst and lipoma removal in London

Cysts and lipomas are common lumps under the skin. Most are harmless, but they can grow, become sore or get in the way. Mr Yildirim Oezdogan, consultant plastic surgeon, offers cyst and lipoma removal to adults at hospitals in London.

What cyst and lipoma removal involves

The approach depends on the type and size of the lump:

  • Cyst removal: the cyst is removed whole, including its lining, to lower the chance of it coming back.

  • Lipoma removal: the fatty lump is removed through a cut over it. Lipomas up to about 6 cm can usually be removed under local anaesthetic.

  • Scans before surgery: larger or deeper lumps may need an ultrasound first. Lumps over 8 cm need an MRI scan and review by a specialist team before any surgery.

Most procedures take 15–45 minutes under local anaesthetic. Every removed lump is sent to the laboratory.

Is it right for you?

Removal may be considered if a lump is growing, painful, keeps getting infected, or bothers you because of where it is. It is important to have realistic expectations and to make the decision for yourself.

A cyst that is infected is usually treated first and removed once it has settled.

Your consultation

At your consultation Mr Oezdogan will:

  • discuss what you would like to change and why

  • examine you and explain which options are suitable, including non-surgical alternatives or not having surgery

  • explain the benefits, risks, recovery and the possibility of further surgery in the future

  • give you written information to take away

Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over. You will be given time to reflect before deciding, and a second consultation is offered before surgery is booked.

Risks and recovery

These are discussed in detail at your consultation and in writing. They include:

  • bleeding, a collection of blood or fluid under the skin, and infection

  • a scar, which may be longer than the lump itself

  • a small dent in the skin after a larger lipoma is removed

  • the cyst or lipoma returning

  • rarely, keloid scarring

Most wounds are closed with dissolving stitches under the skin, so nothing needs removing. If you are prone to keloid scars, non-dissolving stitches are used and removed after 7–10 days on the face or 12–14 days on the body. Most people return to work after 3–5 days and to strenuous exercise after 3–4 weeks. Silicone scar gel or sheets, and sun protection for 12 months, help the scar settle.

Surgery aims to remove the lump with a neat scar, but individual results vary and no particular outcome can be guaranteed.

Where surgery takes place

Consultations and cyst or lipoma removal take place at Highgate Hospital (Nuffield Health) and The London Welbeck Hospital. Day-case procedures take place at Chase Lodge Hospital, Mill Hill.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a scan first?

Small lumps usually do not. Larger or deeper lumps may need an ultrasound, and lumps over 8 cm need an MRI.

Is it covered by insurance?

Removal for appearance is usually self-pay. Painful or growing lumps may be covered, so check with your insurer.

Can an infected cyst be removed?

It is usually treated first and removed once the infection has settled, as this heals better.

How do I arrange a consultation?

Send an enquiry through the Contact page.

Will it come back?

Removing the cyst with its lining, or the whole lipoma, lowers the chance, but some do return.

Do you treat patients under 18?

Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over.
