Facial contouring in London

Facial contouring reshapes the chin, jowls and jawline by removing or adding fat where it is needed. Mr Yildirim Oezdogan, consultant plastic surgeon, offers facial contouring to adults at hospitals in London.

What facial contouring involves

Facial contouring can include one or more of the following:

  • Liposuction: fat is removed from under the chin and along the jowls through tiny cuts, usually under the chin and behind the earlobes.

  • Fat transfer: your own fat is taken from another area, purified and injected to restore volume. Some of the fat is reabsorbed, so more than one session may be needed.

  • Radiofrequency: this gently heats the deeper layers of the skin and may help it contract. It can be used alongside surgery, or on its own as a non-surgical treatment taking 30–90 minutes. The effect varies from person to person.

Surgery usually takes 1.5–4 hours, depending on the plan, under local anaesthetic with or without sedation, or general anaesthetic.

Is it right for you?

Facial contouring may be considered if you have fullness under the chin that has not changed with diet and exercise, jowls that soften the jawline, or volume loss in the face, including after significant weight loss with weight-loss injections or tablets. It is important to have realistic expectations and to make the decision for yourself.

If the skin is very loose, liposuction alone may not be enough, and Mr Oezdogan will explain the options.

Your consultation

At your consultation Mr Oezdogan will:

  • discuss what you would like to change and why

  • examine you and explain which options are suitable, including non-surgical alternatives or not having surgery

  • explain the benefits, risks, recovery and the possibility of further surgery in the future

  • give you written information to take away

Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over. You will be given time to reflect before deciding, and a second consultation is offered before surgery is booked.

Risks and recovery

These are discussed in detail at your consultation and in writing. They include:

  • bleeding, infection, bruising, swelling and numbness

  • contour irregularities and asymmetry

  • for fat transfer: small lumps or oil cysts, and bruising where the fat was taken

  • burns from radiofrequency

  • temporary weakness of the lower lip from nerve bruising

  • very rarely, transferred fat entering a blood vessel, which can be serious

A chin strap or jaw sleeve is worn day and night for 1–2 weeks, then at night for a further 2–3 weeks. Most people take 1–2 weeks off work, return to light activities after 2–3 weeks and to strenuous exercise after about six weeks. Swelling settles gradually, and the final result is usually seen at 3–6 months.

Surgery aims to give a more defined chin and jawline, but individual results vary and no particular outcome can be guaranteed.

Where surgery takes place

Consultations and facial contouring take place at Highgate Hospital (Nuffield Health) and The London Welbeck Hospital. Day-case procedures take place at Chase Lodge Hospital, Mill Hill.

Frequently asked questions

Can facial contouring be combined with eyelid surgery?

Often, yes. Mr Oezdogan will advise whether combining is safe and sensible for you.

Do you offer fillers or wrinkle injections?

No. Mr Oezdogan does not offer injectables.

Is radiofrequency a substitute for surgery?

No. It may help the skin contract slightly but does not remove loose skin. It works best as part of a plan.

How do I arrange a consultation?

Send an enquiry through the Contact page.

When will I see the result?

Swelling settles over several weeks. The final result is usually seen at 3 to 6 months.

I’m taking weight-loss injections or tablets. Can I have surgery?

Yes, but they need pausing beforehand: weekly injections 2 to 4 weeks before surgery, and daily tablets 1 to 2 days before. Your weight should also be stable first.

Do you treat patients under 18?

Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over.
