Mole removal in London
Moles, skin tags and other skin lesions can be removed for comfort, for appearance, or because they look suspicious. Mr Yildirim Oezdogan, consultant plastic surgeon, offers mole and skin lesion removal to adults at hospitals in London.

What mole removal involves
The method depends on the lesion:
Shave removal: a raised mole or skin tag is shaved flush with the skin. No stitches are needed and it heals as a small flat mark.
Excision: the lesion is cut out with a small margin of normal skin, and the wound is closed with stitches. This is used for flat moles and for suspicious lesions.
Every removed lesion is sent to the laboratory, and results usually take 7–14 days. Most procedures take 15–45 minutes under local anaesthetic.
Is it right for you?
Removal may be considered if a mole or skin tag catches on clothing or jewellery, if you would prefer it gone for appearance, or if a lesion has changed in size, shape or colour. It is important to have realistic expectations and to make the decision for yourself.
If a lesion turns out to need further treatment, Mr Oezdogan will explain the next steps, which may include referral to a specialist team.
Your consultation
At your consultation Mr Oezdogan will:
discuss what you would like to change and why
examine you and explain which options are suitable, including non-surgical alternatives or not having surgery
explain the benefits, risks, recovery and the possibility of further surgery in the future
give you written information to take away
Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over. You will be given time to reflect before deciding, and a second consultation is offered before surgery is booked.

Risks and recovery
These are discussed in detail at your consultation and in writing. They include:
bleeding, infection and wound problems
a scar, which may be red, raised or wider than expected
a change in skin colour at the site
the lesion growing back after shave removal
rarely, keloid scarring
Most wounds are closed with dissolving stitches under the skin, so nothing needs removing. If you are prone to keloid scars, non-dissolving stitches are used and removed after 7–10 days on the face or 12–14 days on the body. Most people return to work after 3–5 days and to strenuous exercise after 3–4 weeks. Silicone scar gel or sheets, and sun protection for 12 months, help the scar settle.
Surgery aims to remove the lesion with a neat scar, but individual results vary and no particular outcome can be guaranteed.
Where surgery takes place
Consultations and mole removal take place at Highgate Hospital (Nuffield Health) and The London Welbeck Hospital. Day-case procedures take place at Chase Lodge Hospital, Mill Hill.
Frequently asked questions
Will the mole be checked?
Yes. Every removed lesion is sent to the laboratory, and results usually take 7–14 days.
Can several moles be removed at once?
Often, yes, in the same appointment.
Shave or excision, which is better?
Shaving suits raised moles and skin tags and leaves a flat mark. Excision removes the whole lesion and is used when it needs full examination.
