Otoplasty in London

Otoplasty (ear correction) reshapes ears that stick out or look uneven by setting them closer to the head. Mr Yildirim Oezdogan, consultant plastic surgeon, offers otoplasty to adults at hospitals in London.

Is it right for you

Otoplasty may be considered if your ears stick out noticeably or are uneven in position or shape. It is important to have realistic expectations and to make the decision for yourself.

Private ear correction is for adults. Children and teenagers are seen through the NHS where they are eligible.

What otoplasty involves

The cut is made behind the ear, so the scar sits in the natural fold. The technique depends mainly on how firm the cartilage is:

  • Stitch technique: permanent stitches fold the cartilage into a new shape. This suits softer cartilage, which is more common in younger adults.

  • Stitches with cartilage reshaping: stitches are combined with scoring or reshaping of the cartilage. This suits firmer cartilage, which is more common in older adults.

Your consultation

At your consultation Mr Oezdogan will:

  • discuss what you would like to change and why

  • examine you and explain which options are suitable, including non-surgical alternatives or not having surgery

  • explain the benefits, risks, recovery and the possibility of further surgery in the future

  • give you written information to take away

Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over. You will be given time to reflect before deciding, and a second consultation is offered before surgery is booked.

Risks and recovery

These are discussed in detail at your consultation and in writing. They include:

  • bleeding, infection, tenderness and numbness

  • stitches showing through the skin

  • asymmetry, or the ears moving back towards their original position

  • thickened scars, and the possible need for further surgery

A headband is worn day and night for 1–2 weeks, then at night for a further 3–6 weeks. Office work is often possible after about a week, although the headband can be in the way. Most people return to manual work after 2–3 weeks, and to activities that need a helmet, such as cycling or riding, after six weeks or more.

Surgery aims to give the ears a more balanced position and shape, but individual results vary and no particular outcome can be guaranteed.

Where surgery takes place

Consultations and ear correction take place at Highgate Hospital (Nuffield Health) and The London Welbeck Hospital. Day-case procedures take place at Chase Lodge Hospital, Mill Hill.

Frequently asked questions

Is ear correction painful?

The ears feel sore and tight for the first few days. This is usually managed with simple painkillers.

Is ear correction covered by insurance?

Cosmetic ear correction is not usually covered by private medical insurance.

Will I have a visible scar?

The scar sits behind the ear and is usually well hidden.

How do I arrange a consultation?

Send an enquiry through the Contact page.

When can I wash my hair?

Mr Oezdogan will advise you at your dressing check.

Can ears go back after surgery?

Some return of the original position is possible, especially if the stitches loosen. Wearing the headband as advised helps protect the result.
