Breast uplift (mastopexy) in London

A breast uplift raises and reshapes breasts that have dropped and repositions the nipple. Mr Yildirim Oezdogan, consultant plastic surgeon, offers breast uplift to adults at hospitals in London.

What a breast uplift involves

Excess skin is removed and the breast tissue is reshaped and lifted to a higher position on the chest. The nipple and areola are moved up and can be reduced in size.

The scars usually run around the nipple, vertically down to the breast fold and, in some cases, along the fold. The pattern depends on how much lift is needed.

A breast uplift does not add volume. If you would also like fuller breasts, it can be combined with an implant (augmentation-mastopexy) or with fat transfer.

The operation usually takes 2–3 hours under general anaesthetic, or 3–4 hours when combined with an implant, as a day case or with an overnight stay.

Is it right for you?

An uplift may be considered if your breasts have dropped or lost shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss or with age, or if your nipples point downwards or sit below the breast fold. It is best done when your weight is stable and you do not plan further pregnancies soon, because these can change the result.

Your consultation

At your consultation Mr Oezdogan will:

  • discuss what you would like to change and why

  • examine you and explain which options are suitable, including non-surgical alternatives or not having surgery

  • explain the benefits, risks, recovery and the possibility of further surgery in the future

  • give you written information to take away

Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over. You will be given time to reflect before deciding, and a second consultation is offered before surgery is booked.

Risks and recovery

These are discussed in detail at your consultation and in writing. They include:

  • bleeding, infection and delayed wound healing

  • scarring, which may be thick or noticeable

  • changes in nipple or breast sensation

  • reduced blood supply to the nipple, and rarely partial or complete nipple loss

  • asymmetry, and the possible need for further surgery

  • gradual settling of the breasts over time

  • if an implant is used: the implant risks listed on the Breast augmentation page

Most people return to desk work after 1–2 weeks and to strenuous exercise after about six weeks.

Surgery aims to improve shape and appearance, but individual results vary and no particular outcome can be guaranteed.

Where surgery takes place

Consultations and aesthetic breast surgery take place at Highgate Hospital (Nuffield Health) and The London Welbeck Hospital. Day-case procedures take place at Chase Lodge Hospital, Mill Hill.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have an uplift and implants at the same time?

Often, yes. Whether one operation or two stages is better depends on your breasts and is discussed at your consultation.

Will I be able to breastfeed?

Some people can breastfeed after uplift, but this cannot be guaranteed.

How do I arrange a consultation?

Send an enquiry through the Contact page.

Do you treat patients under 18?

Private consultations and surgery are offered to adults aged 18 and over.

How long does an uplift last?

The lift is long-lasting, but the breasts will continue to change with ageing, gravity, weight change and pregnancy.

Do I need a mammogram before surgery?

If you are 40 or over and have not had a mammogram in the past 12 months, a mammogram is recommended before surgery, in line with UK guidance on breast imaging before aesthetic breast surgery. Younger patients need imaging only if they have symptoms, a strong family history or other risk factors.
